How Do I Know If I Need to Replace My Tank?
A quick visual check every few months can prevent a costly emergency. Here are the six warning signs to look for:
Visible cracks or rust
Check the tank body, seams, and fittings. Any cracking, corrosion, or rust patches are serious warning signs that need immediate attention.
Damp patches or staining
Oil on the ground around your tank or dark staining on the tank surface indicates a leak - an environmental hazard requiring urgent action.
Unexplained fuel loss
If you're getting through oil faster than usual with no change in usage, your tank may be leaking slowly from a joint or fitting.
Tank is over 10 years old
Single-skin steel tanks over a decade old are at high risk of failure. Modern bunded tanks offer far better protection and are now the OFTEC standard.
Bleaching or discolouration
UV degradation causes plastic tanks to bleach and become brittle. If your tank has lost colour or looks chalky, its structural integrity may be compromised.
Unreliable heating
Boiler lockouts or inconsistent heating can stem from contaminated fuel caused by a failing tank. Don't just blame the boiler.
Solid Foundations
Getting the Base Right
A full domestic oil tank can weigh as much as 3.5 tonnes when loaded. The base it sits on is critical - not just for safety, but to meet OFTEC regulations. An inadequate base is one of the most common reasons a tank installation fails inspection.
According to OFTEC standards, your tank base must be:
- Non-combustible, imperforate and perfectly level
- Constructed of concrete, paving slabs, or stonework
- Extends at least 300mm beyond all sides of the tank
- Capable of supporting a full tank weight of up to 3.5 tonnes
We assess your base as part of every job. If it needs work, our team is fully equipped to carry out any groundworks required - so your installation is safe, compliant, and built to last.
